AS GREAT AS THE 750 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Last year was exceptional for the inhabitants of Gryfino. On 1 March of 2004 exactly 750 years passed from the moment Szczecin Duke Barnim 1st established dynamic town centre functioning despite various historical catastrophes up to these days. Both Gryfino local authorities and its inhabitants treated the celebrations of this great anniversary very seriously. The Committee of 750 years Jubilee Celebration was established. The festival was organized under the honorary auspices of the President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski. In the jubilee year special events were not limited to recall history and traditions but to present the image of the town which seems now to be the place of many opportunities. Contemporary multicultural climate of Gryfino was emphasized and the achievements of Gryfino current inhabitants were propagated.

On this occasion local authorities together with non-government organizations organized events to celebrate 750 birthday of the town. They started on 1 March in a parish church of Our Lady Birth in the Old Town with a thanksgiving mass with all the priests from Gryfino deanery. It was celebrated by bishop Marian Kruszyłowicz. On the same day in the hall of Gryfino junior high school a solemn session of Town Council took place during which the first in history Honorary Citizenship of the Town was granted. In this way the Town Council distinguished Gryfino dean, father canon Bronisław Kozłowski who has served in Gryfino for thirty three years already. The Chairman of the Town Council Zenon Trzepacz presented a short history of the town, and the Mayor, Henryk Piłat paid special attention to the present days and the future of Gryfino. He emphasized the role of 'Dolna Odra' Power Plant. The 10th edition of the largest outdoor promotional event - Gryfino Days proved to be an event of the national scale. Concerts which took place here during first three days of May attracted thousands of people to Gryfino. And no wonder as there were performing such stars of Polish showbusiness as: Marek Torzewski, Róże Europy, Marcin Rozynek, Kasia Kowalska, Perfect, Vox, Ich Troje, Grzegorz Halama, Koń Polski, Maryla Rodowicz and Lady Pank. The number of spectators exceeded 30 thousand. Gryfino has never experienced something like that before. The event was commented all over Poland. Thanks to interest of nationwide media, especially TVN channel in the whole country the opinion arose that had no other city that year even these much larger and richer than Gryfino had such a 'kick' and 'constellation of stars'. 'Days of Gryfino 2004' was the real festival of stars.
'Farewell to summer' was the next incredibly successful event organized within the frames of the town's anniversary. On 5 September on the Square of Duke Barnim 1st the group 'Arka Noego' performed - band known and liked not only by the youngest listeners. Their concert attracted the audience of thousands of people from the whole region.
In order not to stick only to entertainment one should mention that Gryfino in the year of the jubilee experienced a real invasion of historians from academic centres of Szczecin, Poznań and Toruń. This was possible thanks to two part history seminar 'Gryfino Through the Ages. 750 Years of History Which Unites'. It is enough to say that the following professors participated in it: Edward Włodarczyk, Władysław Filipowiak, Edward Rymar, Radosław Gaziński, Kazimierz Kozłowski.
During the Town Council session ending the jubilee celebrations the Mayor Henryk Piłat said: 'When I look in the future through the perspective of the past, today, in March 2005, I can say that our ancestors and we ourselves have built a solid basement for further development of the town. Now it depends on us alone how this self-governing house will look like tomorrow. Fortunately times in which we live and in which our children will live do not require any heroic acts, sacrificing life fighting for free motherland. But they require joint efforts in the atmosphere of understanding and agreement to make the town further develop successfully. Is it difficult to execute?'
